I think the Craftsman Planer is one of the better budget planers for woodworking.

hey, so in canada we get the ryobi 12.5 inch, 15 amp planer for about $280 canadian, or about 200 US dollar. At 14 yrs of age, and just starting my woodworking journey, I cant judge it from a professional point of veiw, but it works really well, its really solid, and the adjustments are dead on. not sure why it costs 400 US in the states tho. The beds also both will fold up with the dust collection chute thing on, which i like

I hear what you're saying Matt and I've lived the experience, and my counter is that "budget" is the wrong way to go.
Decent Quality Equipment may be as much as double the price - but wood working is not a short-term relationship and for many, waiting a few more months to buy what you really need pays off in many ways:
Doesn't Limit your design capability because your equipment doesn't function as intended which means it doesn't limit your creativity. Which means you are able to fully develop your skill, creativity and ability.

Thanks for the review! It would be nice if they made the Helical cutting head the standard on all planers. The indexable carbide cutters make it nice.
When I was running machines like mills and lathes we used that configuration of cutters a lot! But for what they cost today they are a little price prohibitive. Have a blessed Sunday 731 family!

How bout the new hercules planer its cheaper than most others(though not the craftsman or the bauer) and feels sturdier and better built than craftsman. I also miss a good old build video from you.

I feel it's a better choice to save up just a bit more and buy the dewalt 735 or find a used one. There isn't a planer as good until you jump way up in price.

Did you try the Hercules? I'm really leaning toward that one.

Another option on almost all tools is used. When I started I purchased cast iron used jointers and bandsaws. Far better value. These entry level woodworking tools, purchased new, are big hits or missed. I place the Craftsman brand in the same quality as Harbor Freight now-a-days. They have gone way down in quality since the 80s. Thanks for the review. It helps sift through the entry level products.

I think I'd go with the DeWalt for just an extra $150 - 200

Trade-off for budget tools is like Give up accuracy? I have to say that's really a frustrating thing to give up.

Craftsman used to be such a powerhouse when it was owned by sears. I've got a 1975 jointer that I restored and still works amazingly

If you had just enough money to only buy one tool to get the wood flat, would you choose a planer or jointer? To me, seems like I would go with a jointer, because the planer would take extra steps to get the wood flat, rather than just sliding the board across a jointer a few times. Just curious as to what you would choose

And picked up a Bosch Miter saw...due to its design

Save a little more and buy better. You will not be sorry. This is a tool you do not want to budget on. As for a Jointer, you are looking at a large investment. They have there purpose in a shop. Do yourself a favor and do your diligence on the planer and Jointer. These are tools you do not want to purchase more than once. If you buy budget, it will cause frustration than it is worth. Just my opinion.
