Yes! Raised crosswalks! Cars are less likely to speed through an intersection if they have to hit a speed bump (that’s not just a person)

Get rid of ‘Right Turn On Red’. Put more crossings AWAY from junctions/corners, and raised, with islands, on narrowed roads. Put walking/bike paths in place of several lanes in those stupidly dangerous eight-lane suburban freeways. Daylight every crossing.
Alas, here in Des Moines, Iowa, there’s no money left to even paint bike-lanes.

Don’t get me I walk everywhere and nothing is more threatening than a car that blocks the crosswalk. The amount of times cars don’t look for pedestrians before turning right on red is disturbing

I think 5-10 years back I would have favored cobbles or brickwork and rumble strips to make crosswalks more noticeable. However, I'm now in favor of raising the whole of crosswalks a bit and putting signal lights before them. Trucks and S.U.V.s have been getting larger since the '90s, but some of the models offered in the last 5 years look like they have their proportions changed to have an extra 6 inches of height at the hood and the bed while not really having any more ground clearance. Raised crosswalks elevate pedestrians a bit more and forcing drivers to stop before the crosswalk in order to see the signal will both contribute to preserving their visibility for drivers of these ncreasingly sizeable vehicles.

Just raise the street up to the side walk level near the cross walks. This would force cars to reduce speed at intersections. Some people might say it'll slow traffic flow, and they are correct, which is why they're significantly more effective than anything like "rumble patches" or "raised medians". We need to take a page out of hostile infrastructure and apply it to cars.

A lot of streets without signals(just signs) or with right-on-red mean that you can't effectively scan for when its safe to turn without moving your car into the cross-walk. We should be increasing the amount of signalling required for right turns also so it can stay red when a pedestrain is present.

A follow up video series explaining in detail some of the crosswalk safety measures discussed here would be great. Continuous sidewalks and lane widths are nuanced ideas for folks to get their head around.

I think the first thing we should do is move signals to the same side of the street, instead of floating over the intersection or on the other side. Drivers always stop at the line, and then pull up into the crosswalk and I have to walk around their vehicles and step into the intersection when I want to cross. Sometimes other drivers don't see me around massive pickup trucks and ALSO pull up nearly hitting me as I walk around the front. Moving signaling to just before the crosswalk would ensure people can't pull up too far because they wouldn't be able to see the traffic lights anymore if they did.

The safer crosswalks also feel more comfortable to walk on, which will be more enticing for people to walk instead of drive

What’s the difference between “verse” and “versus” (versus being the correct word here)?

"What makes a crossealk unsafe?"
Well I'd say it's the cars driving over them that makes them unsafe. They're generally just a place to walk otherwise.

Did I do well? What's my grade looking like? 😆

A sidewalk high crosswalk would really only be applicable in areas with say a 25mph speed limit. Putting them on a busy road that goes 45-55mph would force people to go through green lights at a safe speed to cross the speed bump
(most likely 15-20mph) at sidewalk height. I believe roundabouts and crosswalks that can signal lights to either flash or to red are a better option. Otherwise raised crosswalks would work well in low speed zones.

I have a better idea..just create potholes in the existing road system...
this way u can decrease car speed with existing system...no expense required...
plus we will save money required in road maintenance every year

this way we will have way less than 15 mph per hour...speed

Retractable bollards could put a sudden stop to dangerous or illegal motor vehicle activity regarding crosswalks.

trick question, there are no safe crosswalks. Just slightly safer

I just don’t think stroads should have crosswalks to begin with…

Careless drivers are the problem not the crosswalks.
