Most hawks do their hunting alone. But not the Harris's hawk. It prefers to hunt in a group, and it can be deadly, even for a speedy jackrabbit.

I rescued a juvenile Harris Hawk while during my short time in Phoenix. I was a delivery driver at the time. I often saw them around the areas I delivered. The one I saved had somehow damaged its wings most likely during the violent rain storm the night before. It was good size but was later told it was too young to be afraid of humans. I was able to handle it a little without resistance. The wildlife officer came and took it away to a sanctuary to help rehabilitate it. A month or so later I saw three of those guys sitting on a big pile of cut branches and brush. I believe they had cornered a jack rabbit there as I'd often spotted these jack rabbits running around this particular area. They were just perched on top looking down patiently waiting on whatever they had nearly ensnared. Pretty amazing birds. Priceless experience for me.

I remember walking in the Clark County Wetlands Park in Las Vegas, Nv and seeing some bird of prey soaring high above me. The bird had an impressive wingspan. My friend thought it was a little jet. Suddenly, I saw a bunch of rabbits scurry as fast as they could, across an open area where there was a bush fire.

Harris’s hawk should have been nicknamed wolf hawks.

The annotation of the hawk makes me imagine it wearing a cowboy hat and narrating in a southern accent.

It's happened many times in Falconry. The hawk grabs the rabbit with just one leg and gets dragged though bushes and fences, the leg breaks. 6 weeks in a cast, good as new. That's your Falconry 101 lesson for the day.
