In this video I take a look at my top 5 most played (in no particular order) strategy and wargames of 2016. A few of these games were not made in 2016 but this list represents the 5 games I played the most, not necessarily the hands down best game or games released in 2016.

1. 2:58 - Hearts of Iron IV (Paradox)
2. 10:10 - Order of Battle: World War II (Matrix/Slitherine)
3. 16:31 - Atlantic Fleet (Killerfish)
4. 23:10 - Rule the Waves (NWS)
5. 28:34 - Ultimate General: Civil War (Game Labs)

I got Atlantic fleet during the last winter sale it is seriously addictive. Having a lot of fun with it. I like your vids, even these old ones are great for finding good games to play.

Thank you for your top5. I just bought Strategic Command WWII - War in Europe, after watched you played it. HOI4 i bought 2 weeks ago, really good game. HOI3 feeled to overwhelmed for me at the time, same goes for the Gary Grigsby's games

I 90% disagree with hoi4 comments but I like that you offer a different perspective on things. Really good video, thumbs up.

I am glad you put in a lot of naval history games.  The subject is underrated.

If you haven't yet, try "Victory at Sea", it's a very entertaining real-time tactical WW2 naval combat game. I think it's a must for anyone who likes ship to ship combat.

My biggest beef with RTW is that the AI countries never war with each other, so their fleets never suffer attrition. So as the human player is having its forces reduced with each war, the future opponents remain at full strength.

Yes! I played Great Naval Battles too much as well. I wish that they had a graphical update to that. To modernize that game would be awesome! I remember wrenching to fix my ships and not having to go back to port to keep my raiding fleet at sea.

I can her thinking myself during your comment at 17:30.
The Battle of the Atlantic realy has big shortfalls in the area of strategy games. In contrast there is a huge ammount of books and films about this important part of the WWII.
The BotA was Priority Nr.1 Target on the list of the Casablanca Conference. Without winning this it would not be able to keep the british industry running, no buildup of airplanes an troops for the bomber war and the invasion, no support for the Red Army via Murmansk. What if the Magnetron came later or not at all or weaker as the japanese M3? Its an unplowed field, waiting eager for shomething like Gary Grigsby's „12 O'Clock High Bombing the Reich“ with this topic.

My friend wonderful vid, i listened to your advise and now i play Hearts of Iron IV and Order of Battle: Pacific and i love them both. The don't make so many War games, Strategy these days but those two are just awesome. And i will try OoB: World War 2 too.Btw i like the visuals in both of the 2 games i play. For the most of the time i don't play those kind of strategy games cause of the mediocre visuals (Btw i have a strong rig) the 6gonals games and stuff but those two have lovely game/engines and they look like they play great. And HoI IV is even better than the previous of the series for the visuals.I know all about Civil war it rules and i can't wait for the finish version of the game.So very helpfull vid for me and i will give a like and suscribe too.Cheers. :)

You know you don't have to use the battleplanner right?

I never play with it, you need manual control to encircle big armies and you don't have to watch troops dancing along the frontline for ages.

My main complaint about HoI4 is the lack of any Chinese detailing. China gets shafted with a generic tech tree and generals

For those of us that enjoy details and micromanaging Hearts of Iron III was great. They dumbed down IV, guess there are not enough of us heavy gamer's out there to support a game that is so complicated? I completely enjoy the complexity with individual leaders for divisions, watching those leaders get better as the war goes on. But the best part of Hearts of Iron III is the Mods, with Black Ice and the historical content it adds to the game.

My favourite naval combat/strategy game ever is Great Naval Battle II...the Guadalcanal Campaign. Pacific Storm could have been a decent sucessor...sadly it failed.

Have you ever tried playing the Company of Heroes series?
