General Rules
1. Four players to a team. Ideally 2 boys and 2 girls.
2. Server is the player in the back right position.
3. Ring is thrown flat and underhand.
4. 4th and 5th should catch with one hand. 2nd and 3rd can catch with two hands.
5. Play to score of 5 or elimination (explained below).
6. If you have extra teams, losing team rotates off court, waiting team plays winning team.
Game play
1. New Game:
a. Server underhand tosses ring over the net. The opposing team should catch the ring and throw the ring back over the net. A volley will occur until one team is unable to catch the ring or it is thrown out of bounds.
b. If the serving team makes a foul, a change of possession occurs and the opposing team gets the point and the serve.
c. If the opposing team makes a foul, the serving team keeps the serve and gets the point.
2. Rotation:
a. When starting a new game, the person in the serving position of each team will serve before rotation.
b. When the serving team loses possession of the serve (the other team serves) and then gets the serve back, players will rotate in a clock wise direction one position at a time.
3. Change of possession: A change of possession occurs when the serving team commits a foul.
4. Fouls:
a. Server throws the ring out of bounds or the ring is not thrown over the net. The ring may hit the net and go over and it will be in play.
b. Ring is not caught.
c. Ring is thrown out of bounds or does not go over the net.
Scoring
1. A point is scored if:
a. the ring is thrown out of bounds
b. the opposing team doesn’t catch the ring
Elimination – played without keeping score. Good modification for 2nd grade since it keeps games moving quickly. The player that commits the foul, doesn’t catch the ring, lands closest to them, or doesn’t serve over the net and in bounds, is out. When all players on one team are out, the other team remains on the court and the waiting team rotates in to play.
