Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

We can’t afford new rifles every 18 months! I love the 280 Remington and Ackley. They haven’t made any Ackley ammo for 3 years now, I think in a push to get other newer cartridges on the shelves. It seems like they’ve tried to set up a newer/faster/longer/more expensive planned obsolescence treadmill. Thankfully I reload so I can get off….

one of the reasons rimed. cartages hung on as long as they did is that they were cheaper guns to manufacture.

I once owned a Lever Action .375 Winchester. Straight Walled Cartridge. Just a 30-30 straight wall. Fire Formed my brass by firing 30-30 cartridges in it. Say something about those.

The 280 was designed to work in the Remington pump and auto rifles, not just bolt actions like the Ackley would be best in.

People seem to forget things haven't always been as they are now.

What’s the two cartridges he compares at the beginning? One is a .280, what’s the other one?

I shot a 270 for 5 years, a 280 for 10, a 7mm-08 for 10 and a 308 for 10. Ive killed 100+ deer and cant tell the difference.
