This video focuses on Aristotle's work, the Nicomachean Ethics, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtues and the parts of the human soul in book 6.

Aristotle distinguishes between two higher, intellectual or rational parts of the soul, one concerned with theoretical matters, which are from necessity and whose principles do not change, and the other with practical matters, which have to do with action and production.

Three of the intellectual virtues - scientific knowledge (episteme), intellect or intuition (nous), and wisdom (sophia) - are habits that perfect the highest part of the soul in human beings. Two other intellectual virtues - practical wisdom (phronesis) and art or skill (techne) - perfect the second-highest, practical part of the soul.

Wow I am so happy to have found this. I've been reading the Aristotle's Ethics and sometimes I am just not sure if I am getting it right. Your videos will make good company!

Thank you again. Good to play a few times in the background while some necessary handiwork is being done. I think it may be good to truly absorb this schema, and to learn the Greek terms in order t demark and learn the different parts.

Absolutely fabulous learning of Aristotle's landscape and objects in this tutorial as the very first acquaintance with NE6. As ever, Dr. Sadler your distillation and presentation is engaging and apt. As a casual student, would you recommend Nicomachean Ethics full text, or do you think the satisfaction of Aristotle's concepts is well metered out in your videos alone?

Do you have a video or could you direct me somewhere to where I could learn more about the concept of intellection? I don't understand much of what I've read on it. It's supposed to be a "noetic" pre-logical stage of apprehending reality directly- a form of intuitive understanding of sorts, but I have no idea what that means or how it's related to discursive reasoning.
