The “rush” process is a series of recruitment events prospective members must undergo to get a “bid” to join a collegiate Greek organization. At the University of Alabama, rush is a big deal—more than 36% of the campus is involved in Greek life, and about 2,500 students rush sororities every year. There are a few stages to sorority rush at Alabama, starting with open houses, where prospective members get to know each sorority chapter. Students also take part in philanthropy day to learn about each sorority’s volunteer activities, a sisterhood round to spend time with current sorority members and “Pref Night,” where prospective members visit their two favorite sorority houses. “Bama Rush” took off on TikTok in 2021, confusing and entertaining millions of viewers by suddenly appearing on their For You pages, and it’s become a recurring hit each August.
