As someone who is lacking technique, tone is more of a "do less but make it sounds better".
There are tons of extremely talented technical musicians that i will never equal, yet they have a tone i do not like.

It's more like being an author and obsessing about formatting / layout. There are lots of authors who obsess about this—especially poets. The medium is often times the message.

Obsessing over tone is fine, obsessing over gear can be fine too but I think that's usually where people go wrong

I feel like it's like author wording something a certain way. Some ways are better depending on the context of the situation being explained. Like different tones sounding better in different genres.

Nah dude. If you got a lame tone you can be playing the best thing in the world and it’ll still be lacking. Tone is so important. Just as important as the content. I don’t know why we need to put a hierarchy on these things, they’re all the various parameters we can use as artists, we should use them all fully. My tone is always with loads of verb, delay and chorus and I could play one note on repeat when I gig and peeps are always tripping on my guitar Kuz of my tone. Tone’s so important!
