I don't think Steve would have imagined that he would be helping people through tough times like these with his charming wit, positive attitude and tasty cooking. I know it's certainly helped me. Thank you Steve, I hope you're resting well and thank you Sheila for keeping the show going.

When the 5 grandkids and their parents came to live with us I was cooking for 9! I made this for supper with sides of fresh green beans, sliced fresh tomatoes and fresh cucumbers all from the garden. The kids had never had it before. I ended up making two huge pans of it! We used the refrigerated PKG kind. WOW! And yes we called it SOS, they called it gone! That was 8 years ago and once and awhile they remember and have asked me for the recipe.

In the 1916 MANUAL FOR ARMY COOKS, page 181, we find recipe 384:
Beef, chipped (for 60 men).
Ingredients used:
15 pounds chipped beef.
1 pound fat, butter preferred.
1¼ pounds flour, browned in fat.
2 cans evaporated milk.
1 bunch parsley.
¼ ounce pepper.
6 quarts beef stock.
Melt the fat in the pan and add the flour; cook a few minutes; mix the milk and beef stock, or water; stir the batter in slowly to prevent lumping; add the beef and cook a few minutes. Add the parsley and serve on toast. If the beef is very salty, it should be scalded before cooking.

I sure miss Steve, but it's nice to be able to have him around through the magic of video, sharing his recipes and his stories and memories. My mom also made this a lot when I was a kid too. I love it and still do.

When times were tough, this was a treat, and probably pretty inexpensive to feed a family

Enjoyed watching Steve cooking this, you can tell he was having such fun.
If I had a nickel for every gallon of this the U.S. military has served I would never have to worry about money again. The official name was chipped beef on toast, of course everybody called it S.O.S., very efficient use of day- old bread.
Thanks so much for keeping Steve's channel and his memory alive.

Great memories. My mom would make this for dinner, but she used a couple of packages of Buddig sliced beef instead of the dried beef in a jar. She would serve over homemade mashed potatoes. Delicious! My mom was a great cook.

It is the best memory. My Mom made it and I had it plenty of times while in the Navy. Gotta make it. It has been over 15 years since I had some. Looks so good!! Glad you mentioned the salt at the end. I found that the beef was salty enough.

My favorite gravy! I always rinse my beef to get rid of some of the saltiness, chop it, cook it up with my flour and butter, then add the milk, the best gravy in the world! My mother always made this as well, great memories!! Thank you for bringing this recipe back! Oh, with lots of pepper and served on toast, of course! 😃

When I was in the service they cooks used ground beef. It was not bad but with a little seasoning it wouls do. I now make it with dried beef but to reduce the salt I rinse the beef before adding it to the white sauce. Love lots of pepper.
