The Weirdest Car EVER Made | VW Phaeton

Let's talk about cars that should've never been made; like the VW Phaeton. Weird, huge, super big, and a motor the size of a bus, this thing was WILD and is now on the used market for less than a BRZ or 350Z. So should you buy the W12 super beetle? Probably not, and here's why... Don't forget to sub for daily car content :)

What people don't remember is that this car weighed more than a yacht. It was so heavy unlike its cousin the Audi A8 W12 which actually had a space frame technology to actually keep the weight down.

It was a car that was so out the the typical VW buyers wheelhouse. It showcased some thing that the Japanese brands already knew. That people didn't want to pay luxury car money for a car with a main stream car badge on it. Honda, Toyota and Nissan had already figured that out. That is why have Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti exist. If the Phaeton had an Audi badge on it sales would have been better.

Best car I ever owned. Problem free for the most part. Only one strut began leaking but I fixed it for $385 plus my labor to exchange it

I used to sell exotic and luxury pre-owned cars when this was new, and man I loved the Phaeton. We sold Flying Spurs so much quicker, but I used to love taking the big VW home instead. Never bought one for myself though LOL

Don't think I have ever heard the poor mans name get pronounced this badly before

But yeah, Piech was a madman. Casually made the OM603-606 Mercedes turbo diesels that are just unkillable, had a hand in making Audi's Quattro into the rally defining thing it was, revived Bugatti to get his grandfather's top speed record back in the Veyron, and made the Golf into a genuine C Class competitor with the Mk7

But seriously, Volkswagen quite literally means "people's car". A W12 luxury sedan is possibly the furthest thing from a people's car, so it failed, the same way the W8 Passat also never came back (tho that switched back to transverse engine with the B6, but still)

Just waiting for this dude to kick the bucket so I can crash his estate sale, fuckin guy will never sell

So the car’s doors are armored and it also has armored car windows (2x thickness on every window) and its made on some of the same components as the bentley company uses

This is one of those examples of VW‘s glorious lunatic era.
Why? Well, let me explain.
It was assembled in a factory made exclusively for it, one with a facade covered entirely in glass and wooden flooring on the assembly line (yes, that includes the moving pieces of the assembly line because of course it does).
Furthermore they gave absolutely no fucks when it came to how you could spec this car. Engines? How about a six cylinder, or a V8, maybe the famed W12? And if you wanted to have enough torque to reverse earth’s rotation, why not ask for the Diesel V10?
Let’s get to the colour choices… like the colour of a certain oil painting? Maybe some colour found in nature? You could have anything you could imagine. They advertised that if a lady wanted to match her car to her nail polish, it would be the easiest thing in the world to paint the car in that exact hue. That is commonplace today, but it was a big deal back then.

Dynamics? Apparently fiercely competent at high speeds, dependable in extreme temperatures (high and low - far beyond industry standards), if specced with one of the more… exorbitant… engines apparently fast enough to teach some supercars of the time a thing or two.

It was overengineered in every detail as well. The boot hinges were so complex and expensive they had to transfer production to a separate company.

The Phaeton is quite possibly one of the coolest executive saloons ever made. It was excess on four wheels, but understated enough as to not draw attention to itself.

It was too expensive when it came out and it had problems.
