Sonos have decided to deliberately brick their CR100 dedicated controller!
Not content to just discontinue a product and not supporting, Sonos have decided to deliberately shut off support for the popular CR100 dedicated controller, forcing users who are using it happily to just toss it in the bin.

Why don't Sonos either release a new dedicated controller, or make an open protocol interface so third party companies can make them?

No longer providing updates after 10 years is fine. Not being compatible with the newest hardware is fine. Bricking the product on purpose is not ok.

you no longer "own" anything. You are simply leasing a product until they decide when you need a new one. Be careful what you buy and from

What does an UPDATE really mean? Does it update the device or does it update the maker (on your personal data)?

this video is: "not suitable for all advertisers" (like Sonos)

How long should companies let their hardware be used? Indefinitely! My old transistor radio from the 70s still works today!

"It is for safety"
-BS meter starts beeping
"The lithium battery bla bla bla"
-BS meter overloads and the building starts shaking
"bla bla bla saving the planet bla bla bla"
-The BS meter accidentally resonates with the building and a small earthquake happens

This is one of the many reasons I will never trust any internet of things type device that I didn't build and program my self.

Auto manufacturers are only required to provide replacement parts for ten years after the model's run. It should be allowed to die in the field like a good soldier, not forced into retirement!

This is the problem with the new IoT devices. You haven't bought anything. You don't own them anymore. You've simply bought the right to use them for a while, until someone else decides you're done.

OPEN HARDWARE, OPEN FIRMWARE, OPEN SOFTWARE is the way to go!

Consumers are enablers. People need to wise up and stop throwing their money at these companies. Don't buy products that require external services to work

... Sorry, your pacemaker is not supported by your generic company anymore, please replace it immediately with some of our latest products and please recycle 😂

Once a company puts a product on the market and passes a threshold, lets say 10, 000 units.... if they wish to stop supporting it, they should be required to post all source code so that someone else CAN support it, if they so desire.

Old hardware with lithium ion batteries is dangerous? Did they just admit that their own hardware is dangerous? Is Sonos saying that we are going to face a massive problem with the billions of electronics devices in people's homes using these batteries becoming a fire hazard?

Either way Sonos doesn't seem to care one bit about this danger they have put into people's houses. They say it like like "we don't support that thing any more please don't use it, oh by the way that thing may spontaneously combust and burn your house down, but that's not really important."

A smartphone can collect much more data for them to sell.

This is one reason I hate living in this futuristic world. This is why I listen to Records and Tapes and play older Video Games instead of this modern crap. You don't need to connect to a freaking internet service to use them!
