It doesn't mean government has done great in promoting chess.
Today we've 80 GM's compared to just 20 in 2010 because and only because of our 5 times world champ vishy anand.
Also I would mention that TN government has done a lot for chess including organization of olympiad, chennai GM tournament and supporting many players.
I wish Indian government start supporting chess like TN government, it'll help India reach crazy heights in chess

Some corrections:
Magnus Carlsen is not the reigning champion, it's Ding Liren.
Praggnanandhaa is not the no. 1 ranked player of India, it's Viswanathan Anand(2748), Pragg(2747.4) is second(according to the live rating list).

There were only two pieces of information they had to fact check before the speech and they didn't even do that. Pragg is not India's number one ranked player (Vishy is) and Magnus is not the reigning world champion (Ding Liren is). Also, Gukesh, Arjun and Vidit are all working very hard and achieving huge things but I never see them getting the kind of recognition they deserve. Vidit won the Grand Swiss, which was one of the toughest tournaments of the year, and I don't see as much media recognition as Pragg got when he became the runner up in the World Cup. Same for Gukesh, I mean he is the youngest player in the history of chess to reach 2750. We need to talk about all of them.

Tata Steel is a wonderful tournament, but it is just another Tournament. Half of the world's best are missing from Tata Steel. But it is no match to Candidates Tournament, World Cup or the World Championship. This three are the most prestigious and Hallmark of World Chess. Perform here, you will be revered. To Gukesh and Vidit fanboys, lets April 2024 decide who is India's best. Until then, just enjoy Chess

Pragg performed superbly at the highest level. No other Indian Chess players did that in recent memory. This Three Tournaments, namely Candidates Tournament, World Cup and World Championship are highest level of Chess. So far, in recent memory, only Pragg performed brilliantly this tournaments . In the future, if Vidit and Gukesh performed well in any of the above battle, I am sure Prime Minister himself will announce the honour to both of them
