Join the Vancouver Aquarium for an evening with Kate Le Souef, Tsunami Debris Cleanup Coordinator with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Kate traveled to Japan in November 2014 to attend a week-long event with other shoreline cleanup coordinators, to learn about the impact of the 2011 tsunami and the debris that drifted across the Pacific and to create a legacy: increased awareness of everyday marine debris in our oceans.

Kate walked away from the experience with a new perspective. Each piece of debris is connected to a person who lost something—sometimes someone—in a tragic event that transformed peoples’ lives forever. Despite the tragedy, the tsunami brought people around the Pacific Ocean closer together, and today, the treasure in the tsunami story is a tale of the triumph of the human spirit.
