6 Biblical Reasons To Fast In 60 Seconds (#short)
Why Fasting Is Not Optional For The Believer
1. Jesus Did: Not only did Jesus fast at the start of His ministry, but it is evident that He routinely fasted, in John 4:32 He said“I have food to eat you know nothing about...”
2. You are at war with your Flesh or your CARNAL NATURE. Jesus exhorted His disciples saying “The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Ever since you were born again, your spirit delights in doing what pleases God but your flesh never did and never will. You exercise the authority of your new nature in Christ over your carnal impulses when you fast and it is bondage breaking.
3. The Bridegroom has been taken away. What does that mean?
In Luke 5:34-35 Jesus said to them, “Can you make the wedding guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? But days [for mourning] will come when the bridegroom is [forcefully] taken away from them. They will fast in those days.” So Jesus has been physically removed from us and we fellowship through the Spirit not the flesh or the intellect.
Just as He said, John 4:24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. Stretch your carnal man through fasting and you will begin to “see, hear, and feel” more in the spirit. God says “draw near to me and I will draw near to you.”
4. This kind comes not out not but by prayer and fasting (Matt 17:21): Jesus stated plainly that some demonic influences and some kinds of bondage just doesn’t leave unless a person has prayed and fasted. I have personally experienced deliverance from depression and the spirit behind it while praying and fasting. The reason for this seems to be tied to unbelief. We don’t have authority over things we don’t believe God can/wants to set us free from. Notice Jesus’ frustration with the disciples when they couldn’t cast the demon out of the epileptic boy. He exclaims: “And He answered them and *said, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!” He then sets the boy free, the disciples ask why they couldn’t do it, and He says its because of their unbelief. (I know that is uncomfortable but its what Jesus said so... ) He then tells them prayer and fasting is the solution. It stands to reason then that fasting is a direct assault on the unbelief that hinders deliverance.
5. Blessed are those who MOURN : Biblical Fasting is almost always called “mourning” and It is a safeguard for you to stay humble and stay hot as a Christian rather than becoming lukewarm: Blessed are those who mourn is not a moment, it’s a posture and a spiritual principle for as long as we are in these earthly vessels. In Revelation 3:17 Jesus said, “Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have no need of anything,” and you do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked,” He says that they have become luke-warm and detestable and are in danger of being “spit out.” Fasting is acknowledging your dependence on God and that you are destitute without authentic connection with Him.
6. Your Father sees in secret and will reward you openly, it’s an exercise in faith. Jesus said that fasting in secret yields public rewards. I have personally had my most significant moments sharing Christ and seeing His Spirit move during or immediately after a fast. My very first indisputable word of knowledge came during a fast, and after delivering the message, I ran behind a large pallet of boxes, felt to my knees, and wept in the presence of My Father who had answered the cry of my heart to make Himself known in my workplace. It’s not works and religiosity to seek God privately through pray and fasting, its an expression of faith in the pattern Jesus modelled for us that results in open displays of the goodness of God as His Spirit and fire fall on you, a living sacrifice He celebrates publicly.
