How to grow sweet peas with David Domoney

Sweet peas are a great all-rounder in the garden. With delicate flowers with a delightful fragrance and climbing habit, they’re great when grown up against wigwams and garden canes. Their habit makes them fantastic for any size garden, even small spaces. They lend themselves to cottage-style plots. I grew mine using a range of Mr Fothergill's varieties.

My dad grew them in his vege garden on our farm in NZ 1950s+. Every week he picked a huge bunch for me to give to my teacher, Sr Monica. I grow them now because of the memories associated with them. This year something very special happened. I'd been praying a Novena to St Theresa who indicates she's taken your prayer to Jesus by sending a flower, usually a rose. My husband and I returned home from a winter holiday in Fiji and not only was there a bud of souvenir de la mason blooming but my fence was ablaze from top to bottom with sweet peas. I'd intended to remove the spent vines when I got back from holiday. Now I'll be doing it next month as I've been picking flowers every other day since the shortest day, ie 21 June 2023.

Ohhhh, not getting enough SUN! I've been trying everything- the right fertilizers, the right drip irrigation.... I have 6 foot, healthy vines with no flowers. I didn't think of the partial shade being a problem. Thank you!

I think a lot of us grow Sweet Peas purely for the nostalgia 🥹 There is something so special about the way certain smells can take you back in time and I HAVE to grow them every year or else it just feels like something is missing!😅
