Power Connector Protection in a Rack Scale Architecture

The power transmission channel for OCP equipment racks is well defined. Power connectors are used at multiple transition points between the datacenter infrastructure and the IT equipment. Power connectors can become a point of failure if exposed to any of several detrimental conditions. These include but not limited to physical abuse, excessive dust contamination, prolonged high ambient temperature, mating and un-mating beyond rated number of cycles, excessive voltage, excessive current, and hot mating. Most of these conditions are monitored and/or well controlled by the datacenter.
TE Connectivity's Principal Engineer for Data & Devices - Brian Costello, will address topics in hot-mating and the damaging effects on power connector contacts when this occurs. He will then describe various methods that can be used to mitigate or even eliminate the damaging effects on the connector of hot mating and/or un-mating equipment.
