Performance - 5 July 2015
Abavuki are an all-singing, all-grooving, marimbas, percussion and brass group from Langa township, near Cape Town, influenced by kwaito, jazz, traditional rhythms and also afrobeat. The name ‘Abavuki’ means ‘Wake up, early birds!’ and refers not only to their youth, but also to their philosophy of seizing the moment and getting things done for themselves.

Almost all members were pupils of Dizu Plaatjies, (in Hertme 2008). He is living in Langa as well and is the founder of the legendary former marimba group Amampondo. Towards the end of 2001, they came together and began creating their unique brand of African Jazz. Using marimbas, percussion and brass instruments they weave traditional African rhythms and melodies into a contemporary format. Abavuki was the revelation of the showcase festival ‘Womex 2014’. They surprised everyone by their explosive, energetic performance and got everyone on the dance floor.
