If you were to show a modern supermarket to someone who lived pretty much any time before the 20th century, it'd blow their mind. Meat, produce, dairy, drinks, bread, and all that other food, all in the same place? It's commonplace now, but unfettered access to all kinds of food only became widely available very recently.

Before the days of supermarkets, what was available for people to eat was limited by lots of factors, like where they lived. Economic and social standing also played a big role. Some of the foods we take for granted as staples today were once available only to, basically, royalty and nobility. Here are some common foods only rich people used to eat.

You neglected to mention that the reason Elizabeth I required eating fish on certain days (actually Fridays) was that the Reformation had abolished the Catholic custom of Friday abstinence from meat, and as a result, the fishing fleet was collapsing. This was a threat to national security since the fishermen were a pool of trained seamen for the Royal Navy.

Remember when lobsters were for the poor. I mean they are cockroaches of the sea.

Spicy helps all types of food, spices can hurt or help your food. It’s all up to the cook.

Salt was only rare far from the sea. Anyone near salt water had an unlimited supply of salt.

Let us not forget lobster! The rich would throw these sea bugs to the slaves on ships. Oh, how times have changed! Someone finally woke up and now they're outrageously expensive.

Salt was not at all reserved for the rich, the average peasant consumed more salt than we do today. Please research before doing videos like this.
