There is your problem right there at 2:05. You've got a concerned citizen asking a question, and the staff behind the new mayor thinks something is funny. They take absolutely nothing seriously other than the fact that they are pocketing money.

It's a grandiose gesture. Unfulfillable. She can get some federal cash and do some stuff for the cameras but in the end, the homeless will still be there. Good political move. She'll get positive press. And she can claim it was way more successful than it was. The homeless won't benefit at all.

I've known a couple of people with PTSD who cannot stand to live in some of the shelters because the shelters can be difficult or so temporary every night that one is not really settled.

I won’t be surprised if she does the same thing they are proposing in New York, to forcibly institutionalize the homeless. That guy who said it sounds like going to jail, knows what’s up.

LA is a beautiful city, it needs to be cleaned up. Tourists come to Los Angeles and first thing they say is “so many homeless people here”. Rent is high, it’s historic, it’s live. There shouldn’t be this many homeless in Los Angeles.

So much of the problem is mental illness/addiction, so unless they are going to reopen mental institutions and change the "involuntary committal" laws, it's all just window dressing. And expect more of the same.

Some people don't want rules, jobs, they want to be free in a sense. In Seattle, many homeless people on a news segment said it (after they accidentally set fire to a patch of grass). They get free food, medicine, even drugs. Unfortunately some don't care, because some do care, and they need the help.

Forcing people off the public property, into counseling, psychiatric help, off drugs and work is the only thing that will help homeless.

The missing context that helps to explain a lot of people's resistance to shelters is that they are often places where you're subjected to theft and abuse. Your stay in the shelter isn't permanent. But what is permanent is the loss of personal property as they are not able to bring their tents, clothes, etc. with them to the shelter.

You have to listen to the people that you are trying to help. This homelessness issue is going to require a lot of nuanced and thoughtful change.

It's dystopic how the penalty of not being able to participate well in a capitalistic system is the threat of death.
