Is this something worthwhile and who is this kit actually for? In this video, we unbox this rare upgrade option from Tamiya and find out just what you get for the money. I then install the chassis on my TA02 Opel shelf queen to find out if it can save you weight while adding rigidity. Is this something worth entertaining or should you leave this one for the NIB collectors? Let's find out...

Hi, FYI This video shows the TT01 Opel (black) and not the TA02 (white and yellow) version. For this conversion you need the TA02 kit. Sorry

Even as late as 2010, the local carpet racing guys were using TA-01 and TA-02 where I live, the layout is good, mid rear transverse motor. This kit will help get the most out of the TA-02 if that is what you like.

Back in the 90's there was a TA02 FRP Chassis Conversion Set that was the same using FRP in black colour. I paid about 4000 Japanese yen at the time when I was in Japan, or AUD$50. It came with black plastic battery ends for both sides. I used it on a Calsonic Skyuline GTR kit 58135 purchased in 1994. If that FRP kit was still available then that would be a better price proposition. Weak point over time was the steering arms that came with it - looks like the square stopper causes a break over time or from a big hit. I broke about two sets then went to an aftermarket aluminium. The the long plastic upright part J15 also developed a crack, but I just superglued it as it didn't really need strength. I converted the car to 2S LiPo with a 7.5T brushless motor back in 2014. The car was already running the "high speed' spur gear from the 90s with the sports tuned motor that came in the kit. The benerfit of the conversions kits is they also allow the use of the hard case LiPo batteries, and possibly strength over the bath tub chassis which could have weak mounting point. It also allows for mounting of anti roll / sway bars for front and back which I also did. Not sure if the original plastic kit allowed it as I converted to the FRP chassis from day 1.

Everyone talking about putting these on cars while I'm sitting here with this kit thinking it's perfect for my 58136 PreRunner Ivan Stewart shelf queen.

Id buy the conversion, solely to delete that unfortunate motor mount/battery arrangement on the standard chassis. The weight gain is attributed to that catastrophic collection of screws and hardware. Some of those screws you could use to construct an outdoor picnic table with. Im unsure if titanium hardware is an option, but thats where youd be able to add some lightness. Thanks for sharing Gav, great review and insight into the upgrade.

The Cliff Calibra you showed is on a TT-01E kit not the TA-02

That looks super nice! Is it worth the money? Definitely not…. Do I want one? 100% yes. Thanks Gav, your videos always cost me money 😆

I've got an Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti coming in with a TA02 chassis that i'll be running this carbon conversion on mine. Thanks very much for this video it's given me something to look forward to! Cheers.

Great, I had one in '97. And is was very expensive in those older days😁.

The battery door is moving a lot. So it might wear out pretty fast. So Tamiya putted a plastic door in the kit before changing fibre doors under terms of their guaranty.

Got 2 of them for my 45th anniversary Porches (2pcs) and yes they're expensive. I like limited stuff, not the price of it though. Carbon makes the car look more expensive and posh.

Would like to see you take it for a run. Definitely want to build the Opel and put it on the shelf.

Well after watching this video I went and got myself one of these conversation kits it's winging it's way towards me as we speak now just need to get a TA-02 chassis torn between the white opel and the black cliff opel mmm decisions decisions 🙃

At least it fixes dodgy stock steering bellcranks, which looks like the biggest benefit to me.

It’s nice but I’ll just stick the the frp one in the 45th anniversary kit, looks almost identical and pretty much did the same thing. Back when I raced at high school my teacher had a fully hopped up ta02 with the carbon chassis and he raced his so I think some people would use it, plus in the days of the Tamiya euro cup some cars would have had them fitted for racing as well. I guess though now, a lot of people will buy to have it or for there shelfers.

Yeah Racing also has a carbon conversion kit for TA02 at half the price, so I was here hoping for some differentiation what makes this so special besides branding... and it seems there's none

As someone who has a full carbon and alloy df03, unless you are mad then this is a shelf queen option only, I most likely can never replace my carbon chassis now and it’s not pretty anymore

I think originally it had 2 of the battery stays. I did have one in the past then developed my own chassis mixing the different rear arms.

I suspect that the carbon/plastic battery stay configuration may have something to do with the battery wire orientation. Maybe the wires could get damaged/cut by a carbon stay resulting in a short circuit (as we know carbon fibre conducts electricity), as the plastic ones have nice rounded edges and this is far less likely to happen and less of a disaster.

Gday, iv got the chassis and built it up and its nice, Iv got a question with the steering servo mounts they have two countersunk screws and two adjuster slots but the slots are not countersunk?

My god, you don’t even get bearings supplied for that price 😱
