Great review, Will! I love Elodie Harper's character work. Amara has such strong internal agencey that she never loses, no matter what life throws at her. Such strength and hope. Love the relationships between the women too.

Bought a copy after watching you mention how much you liked it in a previous video! After I finish reading Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid, I'm jumping into this one :)

Intimate, character-driven and tragic? I am sold! I keep getting more and more excited about picking this book up, it sounds right up my alley.
And since you've been so good at giving recs, I want to give some recs in return that I think you might really like based on what you said you enjoyed in this story. So: Dream of Death City by P.J. Nwosu and Legacy of the Brightwash by Krystle Matar. Both have stunning and mesmerizing prose, extremely compelling and complex characters, deep and dark themes, and that overall bleak, yet still hopeful tone.
