Karate Nerd VS Martial Arts Journey Guy

I've finally met Jesse Enkamp an established Martial Arts YouTuber... By accident! We had a great talk about coincidences in life, evolution in martial arts, philosophy and much more!

---

Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey YouTube channel!

My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.

Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.

After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my YouTube channel called "Martial Arts Journey".

Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

This crossover was highly unexpected but I loved it. I've been following you two for some years.

Swede and a Lithuanian sitting in a coffee in London... This could be a start of a bad joke but is a the beginning of a great MA interview instead! lmao

As musashi Said : if you understand the Way broadly, you will see It in everything .

Good video. Really like Jesse's mindset, I share similar views. There is also the four stages of learning model which I think we may have chatted about before.
1. Unconscious incompetence
2. Conscious incompetence
3. Conscious competence
4. Unconscious competence

Great conversation Rokas! And what a synchronicity. The research on expert performance and deliberate practice is fascinating. Especially considering how putting on your white belt over and over again helps create a growth mindset #shoshinsha #manypathsonesummit #universaltruth #budo

Great talk! I've followed both of you for a while now, and it was great seeing you share insights. Loved Jesse-sensei's idea of "whatever I do, it's karate"

You should get a better mic for these interviews. The background noise makes the audio quality worse, especially without headphones.

As a Judoka... I completely agree with Jesse's viewpoint regarding the mountain. I started Kyokushin Karate at 3 years old, Tae Kwon Do at 10 years old, Judo at 18 years old. Not including other martial arts I did for a few months/years. Out of all of the martial arts, Judo is the one I connected with almost immediately. However, the lessons I learned throughout my time in Karate and Tae Kwon Do fueled my Judo. Combined, I feel like I have a better understanding of what the martial arts are as a whole. Cross-training is something I encourage to anyone who wants to grow, learn, and be humbled. Good job guys!

Ok, this doesn’t happen often, but that mountain analogy by Jesse absolutely blew my mind. I love it! So much! Thank you for that piece of wisdom!

If you think of martial arts like music, the fundamental principals in MA are like music theory. The different styles are like different genres of music, but they all have the same foundation. Mastering the foundation is what's important. I train in BJJ after doing Aikido for over a decade and I find the approach to the fundamentals very similar. Very much like comparing Rock and blues. Granted, the big plus to BJJ is the sparring.

Awesome conversation guys. Jesse I've trained Karate for years and have applied the philosophy you shared to boxing and juijitsu. The concepts can be applied to any endeavor. Rokas you're the man your humility seems to be your greatest strength. You guys have chemistry together on screen.
