Dethatching. VERTICUTTING. Thinning out lawn

In this video I use a slice seeder to cut slits into my lawn to thin it out and open up the canopy.

What is the benefit of a short canopy versus a longer canopy or is it just personal preference

My lawn is so bumpy I can't imagine doing anything like this to it. Everyone I talk to says that earthworms are making all these lumps and bumps in my yard, and it does look like worm castings and dirt piles made by worms. What I don't understand, is the last place I lived we had TONS of worms, but they never once made a lump on top of the ground. We routinely found earthworms 8+ inches long, monster dudes that helped keep our soil nice, but the actual yard surface remained smooth. Now in our new house, the yard is painful to walk on and hurts my ankles and feet because it is so bumpy and uneven. Trying to push my mower is ridiculous because it bounces and shakes so much trying to push it over all the bumps. What can I do to fix this and prevent it from happening again?

Do you have to water your lawn a lot? I feel like a longer cut holds the moisture better so a short cut would dry out fast. Thanks.

Will you fertilize the second time you verti-cut? Like an 8-3-5 and water in. Or just re-seed?

I'm having thatch issues. I'm thinking of using a power rake. Or should I use an overseeder? Like in this video. Want to save money vs renting 2 machines. Or are they totally different machines?

How often do you verticut? And do you delay mowing after overseeding? This year I am trying to have a thick but short lawn in the area where our youngest daughter is going to play. So I‘m going for your approach there. Your lawn is looking great!
