One overlooked element of Spencer’s character is his intelligence. At 8:35, when we learn that Alex’s ex is a well- trained swordsman, you see Spencer wrap up his left hand. He knows that he can’t win in a contest of swords, so he takes measures to turn the situation to his advantage.

So when the ex lunges, Spencer uses the wrapped hand to grab the blade, disarming his opponent and enabling him to close the distance and knock the man down. It’s brutal, quick, and …most of all…. clever.

Brilliant.
