Adblocking Isn't As Simple As Do Or Don't

Adblocking is one of those topics that people like apply a black and white mentality to, but I don't think it's as simple as ads are bad and they should be blocked or ads are inherentently good and blocking them makes you a bad person.

I will continue to block all ads until they stop being invasive and manipulative.

I am happy to block all ads and even contribute to SponsorBlock on youtubers that I constantly watch.
Back in the day the ads were semi transparent on the bottom of the video and on the side of the video list and that was fine for me. With the new non skippable 5 seconds ads I just lose any interest in watching the video before it even starts when I don't have the blockers on. I once was listening to a commentary and for some reason a 20 minute turkish gta gameplay ad started, I had to stop doing my stuff to realize what was happening. Ads don't help youtubers as much as patreon with early access/behind the scenes.

Yes, ads are inherently evil and I block them all. Someone else's right to get my attention with crap can always be overridden by me just switching it off or refusing to watch it. I don't get annoyed by billboards because I don't look at them - and on the rare occasions I went to the cinema (pre-covid), I close my eyes and listen to music on earphones during the pre-film ads. My choice, nobody has the right to my attention without my agreement.

The problem is all the untrusted javascript that sites get your browser to run, along with malicious images and fonts. UBO can be set to block first and third party javascript, CSS, fonts and images, reducing the attack surface on your system. They can be re-enabled for sites you trust, but ads should never be enabled because they are a known attack vector that has been used on large sites in the past.

There is also the problem with most videos requiring the volume to be cranked up just to hear it, and then the neighbors complain when the ads start.

What? What thing will replace my hair?

I don't mind the ads. The tracking which comes with them is the real reason for me to block ads, cookies and JS on most websites.

Tends to be case by case for me. On by default but off if I want to give support and I'm not patronising, or the site requests turning adblocking off but still works with an adblocker. Sites that explicitly use ads as a paywall raise my hackles and get short shrift. Which I hope is common enough that it's obvious in their logs :-)

I try to strike a balance between blocking and not blocking online advertsements. On my Acer Chromebook I allow advertisements, but on my work notebook the web browser used is LibreWolf which blocks popups, tracking, and advertisements.

As long as sites run fingerprinting/cross-site tracking JS scripts like Google ad-sense etc I WILL be blocking the lot... Disappearing ads is just a consequence of privacy... I support my favorite creators directly...

Channels driven by the profits of ads are a real cancer, there's a huge pressure to create content all the time to generate revenue, and the click bait culture, where getting peoples attention time is more important than quality. So yes, I'm adblocking everthing until something better comes.

yes it is. ads are useless time and distraction wasting for me and my mental health is better without ads. also sponsors, i will NEVER buy anything from ads or sponsors because i don't encourage bad behavior. oh there's a new "applaud" function that costs money? well guess what's being added right now to my custom filter.

I actually enjoy embedded ads sometimes, especially if they creators that make the embedded interesting and put an artistic flair on the advertisement. It adds a lot of more interest to the ad, and it doesn't track me! (Most of the time)

I do block ads, but if a blog is really good, and they use sensible ads I unblock it on their site. Phoronix is only site which I love but still block ads because damm they have so many popup ads. I paid they once though.

I think perceptual adblock will be the way to kill the corporate side of the internet for good. I cut the TV cable for an Ethernet cable to escape ads and now I’ve encountered them once more...

In a lot of countries youtubers don't get paid a lot, cause of small ad's cost. Usually, ads is a 5% of youtuber/streamer/etc revenue. Creator always can make advertising for money, that would satisfy him, and sort ad content for his viewers. Plus, he will make a lot more money for integrations, merch sells and DONATIONS. And I'm talking about money side of monetization issue, but ethic side exists too, and often it make all difference.
So, i decide to give users a freedom to chose, respect their time and will. If they're block ads, and even would not support me by likes, etc, consuming my content, there are some, who can and help to solve money problem.

I don't have an ad problem on youtube as I have premium. For podcasts I can skip spoken ads and it won't affect ad revenue. And I also support some creators on patreon and other platforms on my own terms. For blogs and news sites I'd say we need more of them to join scroll dot com or something similar. Problem is just like how every movie industry giant is making their own streaming service, news sites have their own paywall as well

I block all the ads, don't care what anyone says, it's my computer lol been doing it since the late 90s early 2000s and have no intention to stop, they come up with something new I will spend money on hardware to block as many ads as possible lol. If "creators" want me to give them money then they better sell merch, I don't just donate out of pocket, I like to fund everybody who went into producing a product, i feel like i'm wasting my money by just handing it over to a streamer or youtuber. I also don't like making Google money so i limit their ability to do so off of me as much as I can.
