Just think how many strikeouts Koufax would've had if they actually called Swinging Strikes back then!

I did not realize Angel Hernandez had been in the league that long.

Craziest thing about this vid….Mr. Vin Scully calling the game. My buddy and I went to his final series at Dodger Stadium in ‘16. His final call was a walk off home run to win the division. Then he serenaded the entire crowd with “The Wind beneath my wings”. 67 years of calling games. His career was longer than the lives of my grandpa, dad, and uncle. None made it past 64-farming will getcha young…

The amazing thing is how Koufax was able to make it through the last two years of his pitching career in 65 and 66 through incredible pain. It took ice, heat, pain pills and shots just to get him through the next start. He said he was nearly high half of the time on the pain pills to get through the starts. It's a miracle he didn't lose the function of his left arm. It's Been nearly 60 years and Sandy has been living the rest of his life with the use of arm and STILL considered the best pitcher in modern day history within a 5 year span. Very few pitchers can say that.

I guess bad umpiring isn’t a new thing it’s been around since the dawn of man 😂😂😂

John "Boog" Powell showing his SWORD (Swing With-Out Result Desired) prowess against Sandy. Orioles rookie & fellow HofFer Jim Palmer threw a shutout. He outpitched Koufax, but Sandy's elbow went out and this was his last game. Sadly, Tommy John surgery was yet to be to be a thing. Happy Birthday to a legend!

if this is from game 7, Koufax is pitching here on 2 days rest after throwing a shutout in game 5. he had trouble with the curveball early and threw mostly fastballs the rest of the way. still bringing it enough to throw a shutout with 10k’s in a do or die Game 7. just built different o7

I was NOT aware that those were not called swings back then!

Back in those days if the batter pulled back even after going through the zone it was called a check swing. These days if you even think about swinging tgeyll rung you up.

This is a entirely different era of baseball.

This why you cannot compare todays numbers to those of the past

That dude had so many levers working for him. He really resembles a catapult in his delivery.

Koufax had some of the biggest hands that I’ve ever seen. Would love to know what kind of spin rate his curve had.

Back then they had to move their chins facing away from the pitcher if they wanted to check swing. Notice they aren't looking at the pitcher and try to look away. That's to indicate to the ump that he was just checking his swing and it was up to the ump to notice before he called it a swinging strike. Actually good on the ump for some of these. They didn't have instant replays back then so players and umps had to work together for the fans.

Babe Ruth played against Cigarette Ad Salesmen. He wouldn't even make Single A today 😂

He swung sideays. You can't see it from this angle 🤔

Welcome to classic baseball.
Where the swings don’t matter and everything is in black and white.

So Koufax probably was looking at a 500 strikeout season with reasonable umpire expectations

For those unaware, during this era the strike zone was bigger. It went up to the top of the shoulders instead of the letters like today. So that actually should have been a strike out on the second pitch.

Sandy would have made Nolan Ryan work a lot harder to get more strikeouts.

Kofax just didn't care.. he'd throw more heat until he got the hitter out
