The Greatest Drawing Tool??

What's the weirdest tool in your art arsenal? @DanielWarrenJohnson1 uses a 10 point divider to quickly make perspective grids on paper.

You don't NEED to have this but for someone making as many drawings as a comic artist does daily, it can be a huge help. Catch more of Dan's regular drawing tools in our recent free video here on the channel!

You may not be a technical illustrator but you are technically an illustrator

For people who want to do this by hand, and not use this tool theres a bunch of videos that can teach you, even tho I recomend using also a ruler.

Interesting. They're very expensive but Amazon does have an equal space divider with 8 points for $9. ❤

As someone who has studied drawing machinery and architecture by hand in Highschool I've had the pleasure to use a tool like this, and I cannot stress enough how good this is to have

sadly they belonged to the school so I didn't get to keep a proper one, however I did 3DPrint one while I was there, that one is still serving me wonders but it's not as precise

It's so similar to an expanding sewing gauge that sewists use to evenly space button holes. They're 9-10 usd on Amazon

For clarification, that is NOT used for perspective drawing. It is used for the exact opposite - orthographic drawing. Perspective is when things further away appear smaller, whereas orthographic is where everything appears the same size on the page no matter the distance from the POV.

Elementary school protractor sets have helped me quite a bit... lol

Also works very well for finding the center of items in construction

You can also draw equally spaced lines on a rubber band and stretch it to the desired length (within reason)

We used these onboard Submarines for gauge frequency demodulation.

This looks like it would be a good tool for architects too

Crazy how people look at this and think "use a ruler". I bought one, and the beauty of it is you don't need to measure things EXACTLY like you would have to on a ruler, trying to evenly divide things. You just pull this thing apart/together the total length of what you're dividing and done.

I have a question. It looked like you drew over a grid before using the divider. Did you use Brewer Method for that? And also how did you decide on the size of the objects? Or whether this drawing itself is in the 60 degree cone of vision?

It reminds me of the Golden Mean three point divider that I use to do proportion (or just duplicate measurements from photos) in sculpture. It's fascinating how often the value shows up in human proportions.

Your work is stunning. The most interesting part for me is seeing how you develop and complete a drawing. 🧡👌

They also have isometric graph paper that already has the lines. Just for 3D drawings

They will bring this up from now till the end of his life 😭

With 3D printing, someone can manufacture a plastic one of these for a few cents, and we could make one with any number of divisions

Dude, I wish I knew this back when I took my drafting class in 2000's. This would made my life a lot easier.

I knew about dividers, and I own one, but I didn't realize there's one with 10 points!!!!
