The F4 nether portal is not a bug, it was a debug feature, that was left-in by Notch.

As buggy as MC still is to this day, I'm still glad of the progress they've made.

I think the worst bug I had to deal with was when your forward key would randomly stick, causing you to leap to your death off cliffs.

Unsurprisingly, attempting to do any of this stuff crashes Paper Mario.

17: score is 0 and &e is failing to make it yellow
19: pressure plates intentionally didn't drop pressure plates (because you broke them)
20: that's just how cactus items were meant to look
21: Intentional over the shoulder view later changed
27: leaf decay wasn't added yet
38&39: intentionally set digging time
52: that's actually a glitch where getting out of minecarts via breaking them or relogging would put your feet into the block below you

bug 1 and 2 were not bugs, they were just part of the bug where snow acts as a solid block

Sound does work in the old versions,
I can't say exactly what fixes it but for the several times I've gone back the experience is:

Game starts off as silent, but usually the next time I open it, it has sounds.
