Proactive Driving Lesson In Central London | Dealing with Hazards | Peep & Creep

This is Emily, she’s done around 8 hours of driving lessons with me. She has previously done 10 hours with another instructor.

In todays lesson we were driving in a very busy area where you have to deal with multiple hazards in advance. She has good all around observation. She uses very good clutch control to control the vehicle in narrow gaps to emerge out of tricky spots.

Emily will be a good driver-driving in London who will need eyes at back of your head especially with delivery and cab drivers who assume the Highway Code is not applicable to them

Honestly she's a good driver, especially for the time she's had in a car and based on the location with the amount of hazards. Two silly mistakes which are easily remedied I think

Good old Notting Hill. I would say Emily did amazing, a lot of lorry/white van/Uber drivers in the area during peak hours who also do some crazy maneuvers. But well done Emily.

Driving in London is difficult and very fast driving is definitely not warranted there. Heavy traffic congestion in downtown areas is when the average speed is often noticeably slower than the speed limit. The speed limit in these areas is often the upper average speed of a downtown street.

When you say a student has X hours of driving lessons, either with you or with another instructor, is that all their driving experience or do they usually drive on their own with relatives or friends? How much private practice is common among learners, is it more than the hours they have with you or less?

I ask, because in my country there's no such thing a a learner permit, you only get the full license after you pass the practical test. And a learner can only drive a car which has dual controls. As private cars with dual controls are extremely rare (they might not even be legal anymore, although I know they were allowed long time ago), most people get all their driving experience before the practical test from driving instructors (a minority practice illegally with cars without dual controls to avoid paying a few extra lessons).
