Volvo Trucks - Ladies Day 2011 proves truck driving is for everyone

On 9th of April, Volvo Trucks organised Ladies Day 2011 at Volvo Demo Centre in Gothenburg. Around 100 female participants from all over Sweden arrived to test-drive trucks and learn more about working in the haulage business. Ladies Day was created to motivate and encourage more young women to take an interest in the industry.

Driving a modern truck is very easy. I've had to move trucks a couple of times where I work, while our company drivers weren't present and it's easy. Sure, it's wide and big, but think ahead and check your mirrors and you'll manage.
It's comfortable, it's maneuverable and modern trucks even have automatic transmissions. Not to mention all the safeties implemented on the newer models.

Driving an older truck is a whole different world! I've driven a Kamaz truck one time and I have to say...
Driving that thing takes skill and even strength to change gear. The gearbox has a mind of its own and the steering feels... vague...

there is more to driving a truck than driving in a enclosed private course. any body can get behind the wheel and go straight. it's how you go straight that separates the drivers from the pretenders

I'm embarrassed to say that these girls drive better than the guys in my city. A LOT of the truckers where I live are usually ignorant and don't seem to care if they nearly hit you. Their attitude is "Move over or I'll hit you!"
