How to Pave a Brick Path on Mortar | Landscaping & Garden Design Tutorial

In this 6-minute instructional video, we guide you through the process of paving a brick path on mortar, showcasing key techniques for creating a beautiful, durable pathway in your garden. Perfect for anyone interested in garden design, landscape construction, or DIY landscaping, this video provides a step-by-step breakdown of the process—from base preparation to paving and grouting. Whether you’re a seasoned landscaper, a DIY enthusiast, or someone who enjoys watching garden transformations, this video will inspire and teach you valuable skills for your next project.

This video features the timeless pressed red bricks, locally made over 100 years ago and salvaged for this project. These clay bricks, pressed into individual moulds and fired in high-temperature kilns, are renowned for their durability and classic aesthetic. The basket weave brick pattern gives the path a sophisticated yet natural look, perfect for a garden path or backyard walkway. By using these salvaged bricks, we’re not only creating a functional surface but also preserving the unique history and character of the materials.

Throughout the video, we explain the entire process of laying bricks on mortar, beginning with the essential task of preparing a solid, level base. This ensures the bricks will stay in place over time and the path will remain stable. Next, we demonstrate how to lay the bricks in the basket weave pattern, giving the pathway its distinctive, woven appearance. Finally, we show how to grout the joints for a clean, professional finish, sealing the bricks securely while enhancing the overall look of the path.

This video is a must-watch for anyone interested in learning the technique of brick paving and gaining useful tips for creating a long-lasting brick path. Whether you’re looking to update your garden with a charming pathway or seeking ideas for your next landscaping project, this instructional video has everything you need to get started.

Thanks for posting this great video! We’re about to pave a large area and this has made us feel more confident about making a start, having recently opted away from using sand as we originally planned to. We’ve watched a number of other videos that show piping the grout, is there any benefit to that would you say? Or is it just about ensuring there’s grout all the way through and it doesn’t matter how it’s applied? Thanks in advance 🤗

Great video! it is exactly what I need to know about making a brick path. Yours turned out beautifully. What kind/brand of brick did you use? I love the sort of aged faded look of it.

Nice job and thanks for the help. How long did it take in real time? Also can the acid wash be done at a later time?

Love the video & your channel is great! At the start of the video you mentioned that it’s not recommended for heavy frost areas. I live in Ballarat and would probably consider it to be a heavy frost area in winter. What would be your recommendation for heavy frost areas? Thanks!

Do we need more number of bricks in this pattern compared to running board pattern?

Thanks so much for the video—it's incredibly helpful! When paving over existing concrete, would it be a good idea to leave a wider gap between the bricks and pour in white mortar?

Hi, thanks for the video. Do you need to have an underlay of crushed rocks? What's the purpose? Would this method hold up in all weather climates?

Hi. Love the video.
I have paced my drive just the same basket pattern.
The Grout keeps cracking. Bricks have not moved yet. What grout have you used. Did you use cement or mortar.
I put mix in dry and watered it in. (Wrong move for me)
Any advice would help me.

Hi, I’m in the process of doing a paved area much the same as your wonderful step by step video. I’m trying to estimate how much brick sand and bags of cement I’ll need for a job with approximately 1200 bricks. What would be your guess if following the same process as your video? I’ve seen in one of your other videos that you use bondcrete, however it’s not mentioned in this video. When would it be appropriate to you use bondcrete? Thank you!
