This Preamp Blew Me Away

When I first tried the @Soundgas 636p preamp with my Bass Kalimba I was blown away. So I bought a prototype when I visited them and have been using the combo a lot. It feels like having an Ampeg in a box. It hand-made in small numbers, using vintage parts, so it’s priced like that.

Fantastically dirty! For anyone else who got tears in their eyes looking up the price, the Arturia Rev SPRING-636 is a nice plugin which emulates a Grampian spring reverb unit including the preamp. I frequently use it with the reverb mix all the way down just to get that preamp emulation!

Price tag is unreasonable. It has minimal components and the Ge transistors don’t even need to be perfect. So I don’t get the price tag other than the needed to fund something at Sound Gas.

I’d love to do something with the preamp of the EXH 45000 looper - it overdrives beautifully, I always have it between the preamp & poweramp of my guitar setup, with it set to clip just a little when it gets signal - it adds an amazing extra “special sauce” layer of something that’s just missing without it
