I’ve been along time MPC user (MPC-3000 my first) and have found that the real only limitation that an MPC has is your imagination and I used to do whole complete full songs on my 3000 vocals and all so yea it’s only your imagination that stops you with these devices the deeper you go the more you’ll realize it.

Got mine in 2019. It's an absolute weapon. So good for sound design and sampling. Just a great product all in all

Excellent information! I’ve been recording music since before DAWs were invented. After going from tape to DAW then to hybrid over the years, the MPC Live 2 is the one device that can do nearly everything I need. After purchasing, it instantly rendered most of my other stand alone recording gear obsolete.

The autosampler + keygroup functionality really is the killer feature for the MPC. I've even used a simple USB MIDI interface (with the MIDI cables plugged into MPC Live's MIDI ports) to control a computer so I could autosample VSTs outside of MPC Software, though sampling inside the software can be amazing if the plugins aren't fussy (cough ARTURIA cough.) Highly recommend making an Akai account and checking if your MPC can be registered; A lot of people never bother but the software you get for registering your device (if the previous owner didn't) is pretty solid!

I have an MPC One that I love using at home. But my day job requires me to travel a lot (trucker), so I was looking at the Lives to have something to take with me. I decided on the Live I because I'll using headphones anyway to not disturb my codriver, so I don't need the monitors, the CV/Gate ports are pretty pointless because I'm not hooking it to any external gear, and used, it's close to half the cost of a brand new Live II and still runs the same software.
In addition to that, the prior owner left all the expansions he/she purchased on the internal hard drive, so score! :)

I've been considering pulling the trigger on a used Live 1 for a while now. I make quite similar music to yours, that retro 80s vibe in a more clip based, improvisational workflow for live performance, but I wasn't entirely sure if an MPC would be the right choice. I think you've just made up my mind. I'm going for it.

I love MPC Live 2 since I got it in March, this is my first MPC ever and after coming from FL Studio to this I haven't looked back yet, it's really true that it doesn't have limitations if you are willing to take it there, it's the same reason I feel in love with FL Studio back then because it's just turn on and go, it takes a minute to learn the interface but after that short minute sky's the limit. I got the 2 because it has a speaker so I can take it anywhere without headphones and just create. I wish this was the standard for other companies or one day FL Studio and Artutia combine to make one just like this and then it has competition truly

Nice sounding tracks there. I’m considering getting my first MPC after many years of dabbling in electronic music. It seems to be the right time as they have dropped prices for entry.

Thanks for sharing your perspective and your music.

Although I have to say it’s a bummer to hear this is putting you in debt. As someone who has been there and gotten out of it, the best thing to do is avoid debt like a disease. Your future self will thank you. Good luck!

Exactly my thoughts. The live has everything I’ve been looking for in one device AND its the first standalone mpc in a long time, not to mention with a battery.
I’m originally an oldskool hardware guy and the main reasons for that are tactility & the fact that they have a fixed amount of latency which is basically negligible- its playable.
Without going into pretty much all the same points you’ve made, I can abbreviate it all by saying its a portable sampler, sequencer which can also multitrack with full mixing tools.
The only thing that really bugs me is the menu diving HOWEVER if I were to really apply myself I would simply map all the most used functions to a midi controller for fast access but those not being on buttons is my only discomfort - eased by the fact that it more than makes up in features.
I would recommend this to anyone & everyone. Coming from my era’s limitations - this is a dream machine.
Thanks for making this vid, I will point people to this when recommending the live

Wow!!! Your information is so critical on decision making. It makes total sense tony a MIDI hardware with Audio Interface Features and Stand Alone Computer is a winner. Unlike the Push 2, MPC LIVE 1 is the winner!!!
Thank you

Jarring editing which is the bane of many a YouTube video these days but great presentation and you come across genuine which makes all the difference. Well done. :)

Congrats on the Live!
I really like mine, it's a full recording studio for me, and I don't miss the speakers of the live2 because I just plug in my jbl stereo portable speakers which have incredible sound.
I play guitar/bass so my workflow is mainly NOT to use the 8 audio tracks, instead I just record 2 bar and 4 bar samples of the live guitars, and use them as "track chunks" like you would on a DAW.
Then a lot of 1 bar and half bar guitar riffs for the faster and more expressive stuff, using the MPC feature of 4 random samples or 4 cycled samples, So that sampled riffs have the complex sound of a live guitar and not a monotonous riff repeat.
Anyway I encourage you to ditch the audio tracks as such (for now), and instead record your live vocals or keyboards into sampled chunks and assign to pads etc and really get used to using the MPC power features of that style of workflow. 🙂
