A British man who was captured by Russian troops while fighting for Ukraine has been sentenced to 19 years in prison.

James Scott Rhys Anderson was seized in November by President Putin’s forces. Moscow said he had been taken prisoner while participating in the Ukrainian army’s surprise offensive into the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine.

Russian investigators described him as a “mercenary”. The term is used by the Kremlin for all foreign fighters who volunteer to help Ukraine fight Putin’s invading army. They accused him of committing terrorist acts in Russia, as well as unspecified crimes against Russian civilians.

The court said Anderson had pleaded guilty to taking part in the conflict for financial reward. However, the trial in Kursk was held behind closed doors and it is unclear what evidence, if any, was presented by the prosecution.

Kids in the West think this is a joke. The war in Ukraine. I told a guy a few years back: you want to go in the French Legion? Go in your garden and stay in the mud for a few hours while outside is raining. It will be for sure part of the experience.

So according to the Times, he is a "British soldier".

So are they saying he had UK government authority to be fighting on Russian soil?

Or was this "soldier" actually a paid mercenary?

And who hired him?

A Ukrainian man avoids participating in the war by bribing military officials to escape to Europe, while British men voluntarily go to fight for Ukraine. This world is crazy.

He was lucky, as a rule, Russian soldiers do not take mercenaries prisoner.
