I never thought I’d see the day where a Yi talks about “burning Brass”

I completely disagree on your statement about lack of theme. I think they have applied the theme extremely well.

I was wondering about this game since I am a big Sanderson fan and board gamer. Thank you for the very well done review. Your description reminded me a lot of Dominion with some bits added on.

Starting to read Wind and Truth this weekend!!

I'm very excited this boardgame box is sized according to expectations!

As far as pure deckbuilders go, it's not very innovative, but it's the first time I feel a direct upgrade over the card play of Dominion and the card buying of Star Realms at the same time. The metal system really encourages to dip your toes into a couple extra colors, and each hand feels less linear. The target system also creates some fun twists around guessing what each player has in their hands. Might be my favorite of the pure deckbuilders, I'll see if it sticks.

Played it last night for the first time (2 player). I liked it a lot, I thought the theme came through more than they were saying. We did find in a two-player game that the most balanced option was Vin vs Shan. Maybe it was the cards that came out but when I played Marsh, I was able to easily beat the other player, unless I was Kelsier then I able to quickly kill the other player (he seems more balanced in multiplayer).

Love this game! Hopefully we get some characters from the Wax and Wayne era.
As a side note, took a couple of games for this to really click with me. Initially I was a little underwhelmed but a few games in and it really started to shine..for me anyway.

I just started the Mistborn series after I was delighted with Stormlight- all because Tom recommended Sanderson. (For which I am forever grateful!)

My family has enjoyed both the cooperative and competitive play for this game. We’ve played the competitive at 1, 2, and 3 players and enjoyed it at each player count. Have not tried at 4.

Got this for my teenage daughter for Christmas. Been really busy. Hoping to play it tonight finally.

The theming works a lot better in the co-op mode, I think. Particularly around the missions- it doesn't make a terrible amount of sense for two dueling mistborns to be investing in a crew hideout or a skaa rebellion cave, but it does make sense for a mistborn who is planning to overthrow the lord ruler to be investing in such things. In that way, the game really does feel like playing through the mistborn story, and really captures that knife's-edge feeling of tension that I liked so much from the first book, as if anything could go wrong at any moment.

Also, the co-op mode does scale with the amount of players- certain cards from the Lord Ruler's deck have different effects depending on party size.

love my game boxes to be the size of a box.

The attacking the target-thing sounds a lot like taken straight out of King of Tokyo. ;-)

I always make sure the games I buy are the size of a box (or tin!)

I'm not familiar with the source material. But man, a deck building game by John D. Clair?--I'm tempted.

I feel like I disagree about the theme. I think the game feels like Mistborn and it feels like Mistborn fighting each other. The metals system is fascinating too.

I read a few comments raising questions about "flaring". I agree that it was king of "overwordly" complex for nothing. Otherwise, I quite enjoyed the game, but as many deckbuilders, there should be more ways to purge card.
