The Sassi of Matera - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site Sassi of Matera are ancient cave dwellings, cut into the side of cliffs, that have been lived in more or less continuously for over 10,000 years. It's a fascinating place with an incredible cultural legacy, and it's a little bit Hollywood famous as well! Let's check it out.

The Sassi of Matera looks amazing. I have seen some other cave houses, but these ones are so different and cute. Living in caves were so hard. living with animals!!!

We loved Matera when we visited there. We liked the that the city offered three travel experiences in one: Adventure (hiking in the canyon), History (The Sassi) and Culture (The classic upper town (where most of Matera's inhabitants live today.) It's such a special place and the fact major trains still don't serve it makes it magical after all the bus tourists leave. The food and Basilicata/Puglia wines are great too!!

Amazing place. Gentrification of the caves, Is there a cave Starbucks.
Luckily as it's in Italy and they know good coffee then probably not.
