****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******

Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.

We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Oh the rocks!!! The bane of our existence in the Ozarks! We moved out here last February, and after seeing how others were struggling with the rocks, I elected to do no dig/no till. Worked out beautifully for us...the garden was amazing, and we had a good use for all of our moving boxes.

Coons will ruin gardens too! My Grandmother and I used to sit up with a flashlight and shoot coons! Sitting there in the dark and then turn on the light and shoot the glowing eyes! Great fun!

Have you guys considered a livestock gaurdian dog? Ours are priceless. We never close the coop, but each farm is so different in so many ways.

Our neighbor had problems with raccoon and put a yellow bug light and an am radio with people talking and never had another problem!

I read somewhere that an old-timer said, "If you have livestock, sooner or later you're gonna have deadstock." We all try our best, but sometimes things just happen.
We've lost a couple chickens to raccoons this year, too. We didn't leave the door open, but it turns out raccoons can make a small hole in the wire into a big hole real fast LOL. Checking the wire on the coop and mending any gaps is just part of my daily routine now. As you said, predators WILL figure out there's free food there, and they'll keep trying to get some. It's only natural.

Wow. That is sad. Glad it wasn't worse. Love your videos. Your tomato plants in the greenhouse look amazing.

A coyote got a couple of my hens in broad daylight. I was cleaning the pool and heard them fussing, I looked over and there he was. I grabbed my pew pew and ran around chicken shed to try and get him. I missed unfortunately. They’re fast. We had game cameras out so we knew they were coming around and not raccoons.

So sorry for your loss. I’ll bet that raccoon had be waiting a long time for the opportunity. Bless you both for caring for all your animals so well. ❤️

We lost 2 layers to a fox last year. I forgot to close the coop door at dark. A couple hours after dark I remembered but it was too late. We installed an Omlet battery operated automatic door on the coop and built a chicken run connected to the coop. If I forget to lock the run door (and I have) the chickens are still protected in the coop. The auto door is pricey ($200+) but worth every penny.

Guys I love channel I'm sorry for your loss. I have lost birds also and racoons are a real problem here in Texas what i have done is install automatic doors on my 3 coops. Another nice thing about the auto doors are not having to get outside at o dark thirty to open the doors.I put a solar charger for a deer feeder and a deer feeder battery on them I have them programed for time instead of light and just reset times as needed.keep up the great videos and God Bless Your family. From Texas remember folks Beans, bullets and band aids.

Don't be too hard on yourselves. It happens. About a week ago I left the coop door open, just 1 night!, and just like Kevin I woke up at 5am with that dreaded realization that I had forgotten. Sure enough my broody hen was seriously injured and about 8 of her 14 day old eggs had been eaten. The good news is, she hatched 1 yesterday and today I bought 4 chicks at TSC and she took them! So now she has a little family :-)

When I have a loss like that, I use the dead chickens as bait for a box trap. Usually the predator will want to eat his latest kill and we usually catch him/her.

In the south that's called a root rake. We use it when we clear new ground to get the roots and weeds out.

Morning Kevin & Sarah,
What you could use now is a rock crusher so that you can put the rock dust back into your garden. No need then to buy mineral suppliments for your garden.

We so deeply appreciate you telling all of the truths of your homestead! I’m sorry for your loss. Everyone makes mistakes. We appreciate you putting yourself in a vulnerable position to share this with us. Sending hugs and hope you are able to find some time for rest soon. Spring can be an overwhelming time! ❤️

I forgot is always on my list. Yesterday, we knew there were heavy rains coming. We had been hearing about it for a few days. I had 5 tomato plants that were trellised but, needed a new row. I saw them yesterday morning, made a mental note that got stashed with all of the others. And, then it hit. Yes we had rain, but, we also had 20+ MPH winds for probably an hour or more. My plants are laying over. I haven't been able to get out there, yet to check on them and fix them, because the storms continued though 3 this morning. It's my fault. I knew better! See something, fix it right then and move on.

Good morning 🙏😊. It’s so exciting to see you getting your garden ready for the farm! It will be wonderful to see the plants as they grow and then comes the harvest!! 😊.
Predators are one of my biggest concerns. So far we’ve been ok but I know how things get busy and sometimes something gets left out. I was out at midnight one night closing up my chickens because I forgot. Fortunately I remembered before the raccoons or fox found them.
Have a blessed week and thank j you again for a great video!

Love you guys!

My property in Urbana is nothing but rock. My neighbor plowed and tilled it for me years ago and I'm still finding rocks. Your garden space is so beautiful! I'm glad you remembered the rock rake though!
