GoPro Hero 12 Black: 15 New Things To Know!

I'll be covering everything listed below in this initial look at the unit:

- Doubled the battery runtime (depending on mode, and a 100% increase in 5K/30 to 70 minutes, only 16% increase in 4K/30)
- Added GoPro Max Lens Mod 2.0 support (with 4K resolution vs previous 2.7K)
- Added support for Bluetooth headphones/mic (e.g. using your AirPods as a mic)
- Added voice commands via Bluetooth mics too
- Added/returned ability to see recording preview on phone app
- Added 1/4-20 mounting thread on bottom of unit
- Added support for up to four concurrent Bluetooth devices (e.g. Volta grip, remote, app etc…)
- Added HyperSmooth 6.0 with expanded AutoBoost (4x the data analysis)
- Added 8:7 in more modes, notably TimeWarp/Timelapse/Night Lapse/Night Effects
- Expanded Horizon Lock feature across more modes
- Added new HDR video mode
- Added GP-LOG (and LUT’s) for increased raw data from cameras and better color grading
- Added Timecode Sync
- Added more Vertical video shooting modes (more of a UI change than anything)
- Added night effects (star/light trails/etc) for photo mode (previously only created videos)
- Added new interval photo mode (different than timelapse photo, explained below)
- Revamped Easy Controls options to make them less sucky
- Removed GPS entirely (it’s gone)

I used GoPros for twenty years and made the switch to the DJI Action 4 two months ago and sold my GoPro Hero11. The one thing that I really appreciate is the magnetic mounting of the Action 4, GoPro's are a hassle to mount and dismount, old school system. I don't have to buy accessories like the media mod etc. The audio and video of the Action 4 for is very good especially when paired with the DJI microphone, they take less than ten seconds to attach to the camera withe no cables. And the big one, it does not overheat and shut down. With the climate temperatures increasing during the summer season many days in the summer are very hot and this is where the GoPro fails big time. I do a lot of ebiking so I purchased two action 4's, one each for the front and back of my ebike. If I want to shoot some B roll I pop off the camera and I'm good to go. Thanks for the review.

as a bike and motorcycle rider, i was happy with the bluetooth headphone compatibility and a wider max mod, but the GPS remove makes this camera harder to use for speed or map overlays, etc.. having to store the gps data from other device and sync it, etc..

Lots of nice little updates. The extra run time is great. I wish they’d fixed the overheating issue. The other day my Hero10 Black overheated after 16.5 minutes @ 4K 50fps outside at ~22 degrees. Lucky I had a second GoPro 11 Mini to keep filming on while the other cooled down 😫 Looking forward to your extended review.

90% of the advertised features were in the hero 11 already. The other 10% are due to a software update. Amazing inovation.

This is a big bummer that GPS is missing and no way to add it optional. I did choose the DJI Osmo Action 4 with additional (optional) GPS because I mostly use it while I ride my motorbike or use it on my mountainbike. A GoPro without GPS is an absolut show stopper for me. Byebye GoPro Brand.

The double embargo seems to be a way to milk pre orders for a couple of days after the announcement before the negative reviews.

Removing the GPS is lame. I do not use it much, but occasionally it is good for accurately geotagging the footage, to measure distances from a start to an endpoint later on.

I was hoping in a low light improvement.
The improvements over the 11 are minimal and worth only for a few specific users.

Many of the new features could have probably offered to older GoPros via a firmware update.

Better spend the money for an experience like a short trip and use the old cameras, than buy a new one.

It probably is worth noting there is a discount for GoPro subscription holders. The camera is $100 cheaper across all three offerings if you have a subscription. While the MSRP doesn't appear to be loaded to deceptively market the subscription, $300 for this camera is a killer deal.

I currently have a Hero8 and I wanted to upgrade this year to give my viewers some better looking footage.

I was hyped when I heard about the 1inch Sensor but that turned out to be fake.

I'll watch your comparisons and then see if it is worth it to upgrade to a Hero 12 or just get an 11 instead. DJI is also on the table for me!
