Syros Greece Ermoupoli
Ermoupoli in Syros is the capital of the island and Cyclades. It is a unique city in the central Aegean with a stately atmosphere and great tradition. Ermoupolis was founded during the Greek Revolution after the destruction of Chios by refugee islanders who named it so in genuine commercial spirit -in honor of Hermes, the ancient Greek god who protected trade. Thanks to its central location in the center of Syros in the Cyclades and the large natural harbor, Ermoupoli quickly became an important industrial, commercial and shipping center. The city is gem with wonderful public buildings designed by great architects like Ziller, Sampo and Erlacher. Some of the highlights of the architecture are the Town Hall, the Club and the Apollo Theater, designed to the standards of La Scala of Milan and other European theaters. Beautiful private homes and neoclassical mansions were built at the same time. Today it is an important tourist center and a beautiful city that has lost nothing of its past glamour, with strong tourism, intellectual and cultural movements.
