Ian McDonald was a voice of the 80's for sure. Every night we hung onto every word.

He did a top rate job, i remember later in an interview he said he had to say it all calmly and precisely for the families watching at home

I wish we had reports like this about COVID 19 we might get some facts instead of rubbish from politicans on tv every night at 5pm

Being 14 at the time of the Falklands this man and his voice will always be a part of my youth. Delivered the news directly without emotion.

This guy's delivery of news was at first irritating but his consistency led to him becoming an absolute legend of the times

Ian McDonald....
The 'Dry MOD Civil Servant.
He gave the news that shocked this nation. I recal a conversation with my Dear old Mum, she said the announcement reminded her of when HMS Hood was sunk way back in 1941.
My wife told me the news, I was in the bath ! I asked her if the Sheffield had been hit by a French Excocet Missile. She said 'whats that' ?
Ian McDonald became a Media hero with his 'dry announcements, a true Gent and I'd hate to play Poker with him.

If you speed the video up to x1.25, he starts to sound reasonably normal.

Ian McDonald, whom I saw a few times, and always appeared as lugubrious as when on telly, was rapidly dubbed 'The Talking Clock' by segments of the British press.

Sure he was a nice person but i always felt it was the London Government talking down to us schoolmaster style as if we were children thinking we would go wobbly as the losses mounted, how many wars have we British fought.

What a terrible task to inform the nation of the loss of one of our battleships. I remember vividly Defence Secretary John Nott appearing often during the FW.

Scary times as a 16 year old and a family member on a type-42

When you use satellite communications that block out radio communications from friendly ships warning you of 2 fast jets approaching, have your wepons officer leave the ops room, fail to detect aircraft on radar and fail to deploy chaff

The fact is the type 42s where poorly defendered practacly no anti aircraft defence

I wonder what happened to the other official spokesman with a pronounced southern English accent who delivered many reports on tv during the conflict? I have tried to find footage of him, but in vain. He seems to have been airbrushed from history. The excellent gentleman in this item is, I suppose, more presentable.

As I ways born in the very begining of the 80s I don´t remember this, but I can´t understand what the Argentian junta was thinking. Did they really think Britain wouldn´t respond? Whent to the flight arms museum with some gamer friends some years back and one of the guys were a Royal Navy officer from Gibraltar in his late 40s, early 50s and as we were looking at the pictures of the casualties from the Sheffield he pointed out some guys he knew and whent to officers school with or basic training.
