One of my favorite Batman quotes. What he means is that they both saw the evil of humanity when Joe Chill stared back at them after killing their respective parents (this is the "abyss" in this case), but when Owlman saw it he couldn't take it and became a villain (he blinked). Batman saw the evil of humanity in Joe's eyes, but his soul didn't die there, he became a hero to save people from that dark place.

I wish I could find the exact quote and scene for this next one, but I think Superman is flying Batgirl around Gotham when he asks why Batman is always so dark. She replies by telling him that Bruce dives deep into the darkness to find people who are lost and pulls them out, once he gets them out he dives back in to find more. He lives in the dark to bring people to the light. This is the sacrifice of The Batman.

oh my god i'm kind of sad now after hearing this because i was playing my own piano and was playing the imperial march and i felt a hand gently stroke my hair when i looked behind me no one was there and it felt like the hand of my dead grandfather who passed away from pancreatic cancer and i made a promise right before he died that i would make him proud this song perfectly describes how i felt :(
