American science fiction action film directed by Jonathan Mostow, released in 2003. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nick Stahl, Claire Danes and Kristanna Loken. It is a direct sequel to the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Although James Cameron, director of the first two films in the Terminator franchise, was interested in making a third film, he ultimately did not participate in the film's production. Producers Andrew Vajna and Mario Cassar, who produced Terminator 2: Judgment Day through their company Carolco Pictures, have secured the rights to the franchise. In 1999, screenwriter Tedi Sarafyan was hired to write the first draft of the script. Jonathan Mostow joined the project as director in 2001, after which he invited screenwriters John Brancato and Michael Ferris to rewrite Sarafyan's script.
With a final budget of $187.3 million, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was the most expensive film ever made to that point. The budget included a director's fee of $5 million and Arnold Schwarzenegger's record fee of $30 million. Filming took place in California from April to September 2002. Industrial Light & Magic and Stan Winston created the special effects, similar to the previous film.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines received generally positive reviews and earned $433.1 million worldwide, finishing as the seventh highest-grossing film of 2003.
