-10 Home Hazards for People With COPD: #1 Clean air ducts! - from the Living Healthy w COPD Channel!
Living successfully with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) requires a multifaceted approach: quitting smoking, following your prescribed management plan, and learning to take it easy when you need to. But there’s still more you can do to gain control over COPD. Start with your own home, which may be aggravating your symptoms.

“Any airborne irritant could make breathing worse for someone with COPD,” says Donald A. Mahler, MD, a pulmonologist in the pulmonary and critical care medicine section of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Minimize the following irritants with a weekly deep cleaning, and keep in mind you might need to ask others to help. Cleaning can both leave you feeling tired and kick up lung-irritating dust.

Clean your carpets!
Your doctor may advise you to replace carpeting with hard floors because they make it easier to clean dust, hair, and dirt — just use a wet mop or vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter system. If pulling up your carpet isn’t an option, consider steam-cleaning it periodically to remove hidden dust and dirt from this home hazard without accidentally recirculating these unwanted particles in the air.
