The Xiongnu-Hun connection has been in a heated debated since the mid 18th century, when French historian Joseph de Guignes who proposed in 1756, that the Xiongnu and the Huns are connected simply based on the phonetic resemblance of the ethnonyms of these two peoples. And we can say that this debate is still in continuation to some degree. So now that we've already covered these two people, let's explore where do we currently stand now in this discussion in each field of the study. I hope you enjoy this video.

Xiongnu is the modern Mandarin pronunciation. Old Chinese pronunciation wouldve sounded like Hyun-u or something similar

Huns were the xiongnu conquistadors who started to explore less developed east/central europe. And they subjugated the eastern and central europeans along their expansion. Huns were the small fracture of xiongnu people.

In arround 50 AD the Xiungnu-Huns divided and half of them went to the West on the Nothern Silk Road ruled by uralic speaking nations, who where culturally hunnisiesd before. In 150-250 AD they reach Magna Hungaria at the area of South Ural where the Sarmatian and the Hungarian tribes lived together. During the trip from Mongolia to the South-Ural many nomadic eurasian tribe joint to them. Because of that they became more europian than before. At 370 AD when they appiared at the river Volga and beaten the Goth-Germans. At that time the Huns where arround: 60% Turk; 25% Sarmatian; 10% Hungarian; 5% Mongolian (Before in the V. century BD at the west part of South-Ural, the early Sarmatians and the Hungarians mixed 60%-40%. In 300 BD many tribes of them went to Mongolia and stimulated the Türkish-Mongolian XiugnuHuns to form an Empire accompany wiht the Chinese influance. According to the Seima-Turbino fenomenon, interestingly the origin of the uralic languages speaking people is not the Ural, but Tuva and the Minusins basin at the Altaj Mountin, similarry to the ancient Turks. From that time we (the Hungaians and the Turks) have our common Wonder Deer origin myth what was the origin myth of the Huns aswell).

胡 actually predates the use of 匈奴 in describing the Huns. 胡 in Old Chinese was /*[ɡ]ˤa/, omitting the n final in Hun. 匈奴 in Old Chinese was *qʰoŋ-*nˤa emphasizing the n final. There are clear evidence of Central Asians referring to a group of people as Huns that the Chinese referred to as *qʰoŋ-*nˤa. I think the issues lies at the fact that many groups living on the Steppes emulated the Huns, taking their titles and names. Many of them probably once worked under the original Huns but had little ethno-linguistic connections with the Hun. It's kind of like people liked calling themselves Romans or Sultans.

I love how you can pop in a comment section on a video like this and a bunch of people will contest a presented hypothesis like we weren't all aware it was a hypothesis. There is nothing certain in the past, youd be closer to the truth knowing any modern concepts of the past are in all likelihood short sighted if not outright wrong every time. Jump back 2000 years or more and you can never know anything undisputably, you can only imagine potential possibilities. Take a seat lmao

Very good summary of the ongoing debate.

One small point of criticism - the pronounciation of some of the names (especially the Latin ones) wasn´t great. But that´s rather neglibible given the rest of the video IMO.

So far as 2023, the historical sciences have not yet proved. Only the names sounds similar. The comparative genome researches so far have failed to prove connection - despite media outlets speaking of "some kind of recent research" that proved their connection etc. Even the Xiongnu style vase (the only archeological material overlapping that is found in their cultures) differs in use and prevalence. In Xiongnu, such vases are found in graves as ceremonial and symbolic object and in big amounts. In Hunnu culture, there are a few found near water sources, but never in a grave! And not many in general found in Hunnu culture. The connection we speak of is the inheritance of 18th-19th century European scholars speculations. I read a German researcher in this subject. She is still active and young. I forgot her name.

Linguistics is a very new Science if one call it as science. In my understanding of it as follows, linguistics born out of, boiled egg, scrambled egg omelette and lastly pizza. I think main language was/ is as a blood egg a very well established TURKISH” language.

If I hadn't gotten a newer genetic report this year I would have lingered grieving over the Xiongnu connection. Instead I'm glad to have finished out as Wusun, Tarim and Manchu. My salute to those who are still unsure in the central asian "mixing bowl" of history.

I was never interested in the topic as a hungarian. I was speaking with a Chinese girl about their language,
and I came up with the old hungarian rune writings. She said these looks like the old Chinese Oracle bone inscripts, and that was by the Xiongnu people, what was the upper neightbor of China. And anno they Built the big wall to protect from them, these nomadic tribes gone to Europe. She never heard of Hungary. After that this video is very exciting.

Frank and french are not same, iran and arian are not same, scythian and ossetian are not same according to your prejudices. Possible, but hunnic people have much more similarities than all these comparisons. Lots of youtubers talk about indoeuropean scythians (totally wrong) without any evidence. But, I see that same youtubers close their eyes to and deny all these exact connections culturally, genetically, linguistically, archeologically etc.

Hun, Xiongnu, Chionite, Khan are all same people having nomadic lifestyle and mixed genetics with local elder people of west asia, south asia, europe having extremely different paternal lineages compared to siberia.

The most people ignore the fact that Modu, his father Tumen, Hun are all Mongolian words. We still use them. Hun means human/person in Mongolian language. 10 Hun means 10 people.

It is very simple and it was right in front of us the whole time.
Towards the end of the video it seems to come to a sort of conclusion that it had to be a political alliance. Yes but is is more! Namely it was in my view the "Blood Contract" or "Blood Oath". Examine the nations that hold this kind of an arrangement in their culture! You will find the Scythians, Xiongnu, Huns, Avars, all the others who practiced it or hold it sacred even today. That is a lifetime unbreakable bond that united tribes even with different languages or different ethnicity.
