As an Italian, I can confirm that we don't even have pepperoni here, except for some rare pizzerias. We have very similar kinds of meat (way older than pepperoni) but not that one. I wanna try it one day, but I'm content with our traditional salami at the moment, thanks.

My sister went to Europe during a transfer student thing in high school, and during her 3 or 4 days running around Italy, they stopped for authentic Italian pizza. She said make it simple just pepperoni extra cheese. And they gave her a bell pepper pizza, which she was very confused about but ate nonetheless. Apparently, many of the students had bell pepper pizza.
