I used an Alesis Multimix4 USB model for a while, doing voiceover work.  I would avoid that, as it produces nasty artifacts at harmonics of 1kHz. Upgraded to Audient iD14 a while back, and couldn't be happier, but that's well out of the $150 Canadian range.

So glad you addressed the audio interface question. I was disappointed to hear about the behringer gear. Does this apply to the latest audio interfaces with the Midas preamps? Like the UMC404HD? Thanks for the video!

The Presonus Audiobox is about half the price of the 22VSL, and I have picked them up for as little as $25 USD from pawn shops. They would be a passable choice for a beginner. The pres sound OK, and they include the MIDI ports of the 22VSL. They are WAY better than those terrible old Fast Tracks etc., and at ~15ms settings the Audiobox is an acceptable interface for use as a live VSTi host on most of the machines I've got. I am always looking for a *low cost* beater interface with better ASIO latency / output performance and hope to test out the UMC204HD one of these days. It would be really nice if there was some kind of empirical benchmark for such things, but as of yet, there isn't.

shiet i have a m audio fast track ultra haha. I figured out the hard way that I can only use mavericks for my interface to work. You don't like the pre-amps in them? What if I were to just buy a preamp and use that to color my DI instruments instead of my interface?
