In Greek mythology Prometheus is a Titan culture hero credited to have made man out of clay.
He said to have tricked the Gods and stole fire and given it to man. This brought in development and progress of mankind.
He is said to be highly intelligent and a champion of mankind.
This earned him the wrath of the Gods. It a main story in Greek mythology.
It is said that Zeus the Greek God punished Prometheus for transgression and is a popular subject for ancient and modern art.
The story goes that Prometheus was bound to a rock and each day a vulture would devour his liver and the next day it would grow again as Prometheus was considered immortal. In ancient Greek culture the liver was the seat of emotions.
In some versions of this story it says that Hercules rescued Prometheus.
In other versions they say that Prometheus established the form of animal sacrifice as practiced in ancient Greek religion.
In Western classical tradition he became the cult figure for scientific thought and human striving.
In the Romantic era he is considered as the genius who strived to improve human existence and ended in tragic circumstances.
The story of Prometheus's suffering and ultimate release from his torment has inspired artists and writers for centuries. Among the most important early works dealing with the myth were a series of plays written by the Greek playwright Aeschylus. Only one of these works, Prometheus Bound, survives. The Roman poet Ovid incorporated parts of the story in his work the Metamorphoses .Prometheus has also been the subject of more modern works of art, music, and literature by such individuals as the composer Beethoven and the poets Byron, Shelley, and Longfellow.
