What Are Perceptual Positions?
Perceptual positions refer to the different perspectives one can adopt during conversations, conflicts, and decision-making. The hosts explain that to function effectively, individuals should be able to navigate three distinct positions:
▶ First Position (Self):
This is the subjective viewpoint of oneself, encompassing personal feelings, beliefs, and needs. While this position can enhance assertiveness and self-awareness, staying too long can lead to egotism, selfishness, and an inability to recognize others' needs.
▶ Second Position (Other):
This position involves stepping into another person's shoes to experience their thoughts and emotions. It fosters empathy, creating rapport and strengthening emotional bonds. However, excessive identification with another's perspective can lead to taking on their emotional burdens.
▶ Third Position (Observer):
The observer’s perspective is detached and objective, allowing one to view interactions without emotional involvement. This position is valuable for conflict resolution and self-reflection but can result in disconnection from both oneself and others if relied upon too heavily.
Practical Applications:
The hosts discuss how to effectively use these positions to gain clarity and insight. They suggest:
▶ Shifting Between Positions:
Intentionally moving from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and back to 1st can facilitate emotional understanding and objective analysis.
▶ Anchoring Positions Spatially:
Techniques such as the "chairs method" can be employed to help individuals physically embody each position during discussions.
▶ Gestalt Therapy Influences:
They reference Fritz Perls and the importance of setting up one’s own anchors for effective transitions between positions.
Humorous Anecdote:
Report from the trenches - Uncle Bud recalls his time creating a special brigade for an early morning assault, while defending France from the Germans
Empowering Questions:
Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their habitual perceptual position. Questions posed include: "Which position do you spend the most time in?" and "What will you do about that?" This self-inquiry can lead to greater flexibility and enhanced interpersonal dynamics.
Metafive:
Mike Mandel recounts a memory from 1993 during his tour in Australia with Kingsley Gford. After a gig in Canberra, they visited Kingsley’s parents, where Mike spotted a set of Golden Book Encyclopedias that had been a cherished part of his childhood. Years later, after Kingsley’s parents passed away, Mike received the complete set as a bequest from Kingsley’s mother. Overcome with emotion, he treasures these books as a lasting reminder of his youth and the special bond he shared with Kingsley’s family.
