Homemade Drum Sander

My homemade drum sander was made mainly for the purpose of precisely sanding angled wedges for my shell sculptures. This video shows some of the construction of the basic machine, and I will show my wedge sanding fixture soon in a future video. The sander is built on my workbench, and is belt-driven by a 3/4 horsepower motor. It uses a standard 9x11 sheet of sandpaper. The most interesting feature is the thickness adjustment which is adjusted with a section of threaded rod bent into an arc. The machine is built very solid with a heavy 1" steel shaft supported on pillow block bearings, and a thick baltic birch table. No foam padding is needed under the abrasive because there is very little deflection of the drum or table during use.

That threaded rod adjustment disc dial is pretty sweet.
